9/8/09

Theater District: Rustic Kitchen

Rustic Kitchen, 210 Stuart Street, Boston: $5.95 appetizers at the bar, 4 pm - 6 pm Mon- Fri.

Rustic Kitchen is located in front of the Renaissance Boston Hotel and adjacent to the Stuart Street playhouse Rustic Kitchen is a staple dinner option for theater goers.

Visted recently, this is my tweet: Rustic Kitchen= B+ The food was excellent and the ambiance nice, but we found the bar small and the bartenders slightly service impaired

8/18/09

Townsend's Restaurant, 81 Fairmont Ave, Hyde Park : M-F Under $10 Bar Menu

Some items include: Grilled Romaine Hearts, dressed with Caesar, white anchovies & fresh Croutons ($5); Rhode Island fried Calamari with sides of spicy mayo & marinara ($10); Margherita pizza with Fiore Di Nonno Scamortza & basil marinated tomatoes ($9)

8/5/09

South Boston: Channel Cafe

Channel Cafe, 300 Summer St: 5-7pm where $10 for a burger and a beer

My friend Becca says the food is wonderful here!

8/3/09

Theater District: Legal Seafood

Legal Seafood, various location, Boston: Mon-Thurs 6 oysters for $6 until 6 pm.

Since Leagal's is everywhere in Boston it would be easy to get to one of them by 6 pm for some oysters!

Check out what they are saying on Chowhound about this deal: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/627436

Beacon Hill: No. 9 Park

No. 9 Park, 9 Park St., Boston: Free yummy bar snacks including homemade potato chips topped with crème fraîche and caviar and gougères (Wikipedia says a gougère is French cuisine, "a savory choux pastry with cheese.")

I hate to admit this, but I have never been to No. 9 Park. People argue that it's the best restaurant in Boston, but on my small salary I have yet to splurge and go. However now that I am aware of the free bar bites you may see me on a stool with a dirty martini VERY soon!

8/2/09

Cambridge: Ole

Ole, 11 Springfield St, Cambridge: $1 Taquitos at the bar Tues-Friday 5-6 pm

This Frugal Feaster cannot keep up with all the happy hour specials in Boston! I don't have the budget or the time! (of course if someone wanted to pay me to do this that would be different) So this is yet again another happy hour I have not yet attended. However the reviews of Ole on Yelp were, for the most part, very good. So if you work in Inman Sq., or near it, I would check out their taquito special!!

7/16/09

Theater District: Gypsy Lounge

Gypsy Lounge, 116 Boylston St. Boston: Thursday nights $4.99 steak frites 5-8 pm

This is a crazy club come 9 pm any night of the week...has anyone ever been there or eaten there before the line out the door fills with ladies in stilettos?

7/14/09

Cambridge: Small Plates

Small Plates, 56 JFK St., Cambridge: Happy Tappy Hour; a selection of tapas, wine, and wine cocktails for $5 each. Mondays 5-6 pm, Tues-Thurs 4-6 pm

If you work in Cambridge and can get out of work at 5 pm on-the-dot this would be a good happy hour to check out!

7/10/09

South End: Rocca

Rocca, 500 Harrison Ave, Boston: Rocca just updated their 5@5 deal to be 5@10, too! get 5 apps for just $5 each late-nite in the lounge, 10-11 mon-thurs, 10-12 fri-sat.

Options include; a seared spicy scallop on a Malay salad, Indian spiced fried onion rings, sweet potato fries with sweet chickpea dip, cauliflower fritters, and lamb spring rolls.

BanQ's decor alone should get you in the door, this is one of the coolest new restaurants in the South End!

Back Bay: Stix

Stix Restaurant & Lounge, 35 Stanhope St.: Throughout the summer, Tuesday -Saturday, from 5-7 p.m. Stix has a $1 raw bar and $5 frozen Myers's mojitos at the bar and on the patio. The raw bar includes oysters on the half shell, king crab legs, scallops, shrimp, and jumbo crab claws, all for only $1 each. They are also offering 50% off all bottles of wine!

This is a really great deal for people who like seafood, too bad I'm not one of them...but the bottles of wine...that I can get in to!

7/8/09

Seaport: Persephone

Persephone and, 283 Summer St., Boston: Persephone has a $5 Bar Menu every night! It includes offerings such as a baked to order bacon & sea salt pretzel, housemade pickles, french fries gremolata bruschetta!

I went here for the most recent restaurant week and thought the food was excellent. The atmosphere takes a little getting used to since it's a clothing boutique as well as a restaurant "concept."

7/3/09

Back Bay: Vlora

Vlora, 545 Boylston St, Boston: $5 appetizers everyday from 4pm-6pm

EVERYDAY!!! I love it when restaurants continue the specials throughout the weekend! How is Vlora? I have not had the pleasure of going there yet!

Back Bay: Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice, 205 Berkeley St, Boston (there's a location in Cambridge as well): $1.25 appetizers at the bar between 4-6pm Monday-Friday.

I walked by Fire and Ice around 5:30 pm on Wednesday night this week (7/1/09) and the place was packed! They were advertising STUMP Trivia starting at 8 pm, cheap PBR drafts and $1.25 appetizers! What's not to love!!?? How are the appetizers? The food here is decent, if you like stirfrys, but I don't think I've ever had an appetizer at Fire and Ice.

6/30/09

Somerville: Kickass Cupcakes

Kickass Cupcakes, Highland Ave, Somerville: Cocktail Cupcake Happy Hour! Usually on the last Monday of every month, 5-7pm.

Free tastings of mini cupcakes with cocktail inspired flavors.
Last month's featured cocktail cupcakes Singapore Sling, Chocolate Amaretto Kiss and Margarita.

I live down the street from Kickass Cupcakes and I can attest to their godliness. Made with all natural ingredients, these meticulously crafted works of art are heaven in a folded paper cup. Did anyone go to the June 29 Happy Hour? How was it??

Beacon Hill: 75 Chestnut

75 Chestnut, 75 Chestnut St., Boston: Free Cookie Night! Tuesday night at 5 pm, the restaurant tests out a new cookie recipe. And you can even bring in your favorite cookie recipe to be shared, and they will prepare it and put it to the test. The best cookie recipe will win dinner for two at 75 Chestnut!

I love the burgers at 75 Chestnut.... so hopefully the cookies are good too!

South End: Gaslight

Gaslight, 560 Harrison Ave, Boston: Monday through Friday from 5-6:30 p.m. $5.95 cocktails and $2 Pabst beers, plus feast on free chef's whim bar bites. The special is only available at the bar.

The gaslight has AMAZING food and its very reasonable. Plus the ambiance is fantastic with floor to ceiling subway tile. Entrees are in the $20 range. My boyfriend and I dined there for Valentines day this year and got a bottle of wine, and appetizer, 2 entrees and a dessert for under $130! I can't say wnough about the food, service and value. This place ranks in my top ten!

6/29/09

Back Bay: Sel De La Terre

Sel De La Terre, 774 Boylston St. Boston: $1 Oysters - $1 Charcuterie Plates - $5 Cocktail Special Every Monday Night from 5-7pm!

I love that Vox is running this special on Saturdays and Sundays as well!

6/17/09

South End: Pho Republique

Pho Republique, 1415 Washington St., Boston: Monday through Thursday from 5:30–7:00 p.m. $2 Dim Sum. Only available at the bar.

Dim Sum includes: steamed shrimp shu mai dumplings, chicken and ginger potstickers, candied garlic spare ribs, veggie rangoon, edamame gyoza, crispy or steamed tofu, or seaweed salad.

I thought Pho Republiqe has done away with the $2 dim sum, but apparently I was wrong because this info was in Boston Magaine last week! Go to this South End staple, get a Mai Tai, and put back sum dim sum!!

6/12/09

South End: Aquitane

Aquitaine, 569 Tremont St., Boston: Sunday-Thursday, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Aquitaine offers complimentary hors d'oeuvres and $5 vintage cocktails.

Boston Magazine says cocktails called the Americano (sweet vermouth, campari, and soda water), and the Blackberry Bramble (gin, black currant liqueur, and fresh lime juice) are excellent. Aquitane also offers a carafe of Beaujolais and two appetizers for just $26

my review of Twitter:
Aquitane HH= D. Similar to the bar itself, the bar bites were minuscule. the bartender was too intrusive and the drinks were few and bitter

6/11/09

Financial District: Vinalia

Vinalia, 34 Summer Street, Boston, MA: Cheese & Wine Wednesdays starting at 6:00 pm

"Cheese & Wine Wednesdays" are at Vinalia every Wednesday. Enjoy a complimentary sampling of the best selection of wines from Vinalia's extensive wine list. Accompanied by delicious Fruit & Cheese platter.

6/10/09

South End: Coda Bar and Kitchen

Coda, 329 Columbus Ave: $5 cocktail and appetizer menu special for the month of June!

This is the place that went in next to Clery's last year and it's AWESOME. I had a burger there that was DELICIOUS. The atmosphere is laid back, not too dressy. Would be a great place for a first date!

Coda Bar and Kitchen is offering "Birthday Bites & Cocktails" on their menu this June. Throughout the month, choose a cocktail and an appetizer and pay just $5 from this special menu:

Cocktails
The Grapefruit Summer Press
The Raspberry Lime Rickey

Appetizers
Tomato, basil and brie crostini/served on toasted French bread with dressed greens
Fried calamari/crispy calamari tossed with grape tomatoes and banana peppers, served over mesclun greens with citrus dressing
Roasted chicken wings/tossed in curry lime butter and served with cilantro sour cream

6/9/09

Arlington: Tryst

Tryst, 689 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington: $5 Burger Wednesdays in June.

Yelper's like Tryst: http://www.yelp.com/biz/tryst-arlington
And Boston Chefs likes Tryst: http://bostonchefs.com/news/event/2009/6/3/wednesday-burger-deal-tryst-team/

Sounds like a frugal feast to me! I think I can get to Arlington on a Wednesday before the end of June....

6/4/09

Mission Hill: The Savant Project

The Savant Project, 1625 Tremont St., Brookline: Afternoon Delight: 7 Days a week 2:30-6PM, half priced tapas with drink purchase.

I love that The Savant project offers this special 7-days a week! I'm going to try and go some lazy Sunday afternoon soon! Has anyone had the Tapas there? How are they?

6/3/09

Back bay: Brasserie Jo

Brasserie Jo, 120 Huntington Ave, Boston: FREE! at the bar from 5-11 pm; small Alsatian tarte (imagine a super-mini pizza with olives, tomato, and cheese), warm mini-baguette with a carrots marinated with a horseradish sauce. Also there is a $ 2.95 French Style Hot Dog.
Their website says: "Our French style hot dog maker warms up the French Baguette from the inside! Drizzle on some Dijon mustard and you have a tasty treat for a great price." I am sooo there

Financial District: J.A. Stats

J.A. Stats, 99 Broad Street, Boston: Monday-Friday, 4-8 PM for Half Price Appetizers!

YES! Another Happy Hour to helping us out and extending to (wait for it...) 8 pm! It's especially nice that it's in the Financial District where many people are still at work at 7 pm. This means you can leave work at 7 pm and still get to a bar to enjoy half priced apps!! I have no idea if the food's any good though...comments anyone???

6/2/09

Back Bay: Mini Bar

Mini Bar, 51 Huntington Avenue, Boston MA: $2 Mini Kobe Beef Sliders Monday to Thursday 5 to 7 pm

This is the new bar in the Copley Square Hotel. I went here on a Friday night recently, which means I could not indulge in the sliders. However I have to recommend their Elderflower martini, it was one of the best drinks I've ever had!

The Yelpers love the sliders, stating the mini burgers are, "amazing." So I will definitely be going back for another martini and some sliders!

Kingston Station

Kingston Station, 25 Kingston St. Boston: Half Price Appetizers Monday to Wednesday 5 pm to 7 pm

My good friend Kate wrote me this recently; "You should definitely go to Kingston Station and put it on your blog. It’s right next to JJ Foley’s/across from Good Life. I was there last night for the second time and it’s really good—plus they have half price apps after work Monday-Wednesday. I can personally vouch for the yumminess of the baked brie and the truffle fries. And my new favorite drink is a combo of the Moscow Mule and the Partly Cloudy. We should go!"

Thanks Kate!

6/1/09

I've only been here to dance and drink, has anyone ever gone and gotten a burger or taco? Are they good??

5/26/09

South Boston: 606 Congress

606 Congress, In the Renaissance Marriott, Boston: Fridays from 5:00 to 8:00pm, on the patio, enjoy either a bucket of four Coronitas, a signature 606 margarita, or a raw bar sampler for just $6.06 (cute).

There's Free parking all summer too (which is good because it's not too cloae to a T stop)! I'm going to try to get there some beautiful Friday summer night soon....if you get there first let me know how it is!

Brighton: Brighton Beer Garden

Brighton Beer Garden, 386 Market Street, Brighton, MA: "Classic" burgers and Miller High Lifes are $2.50 (each) on Tuesdays.

If any of you are like me and haven't been to Brighton since you graduated college the Brighton Beer Garden is where SoHo used to be. I've been to their sister bar, the Atlantic Beer Garden, next to the Seaport World Trade Center and thought the beer selection (obviously) was good and the nachos we decent (C+, they were mostly just cheese and salsa).

How's the Brighton garden measure up?

Back Bay: Bonfire

Bonfire, 50 Park Plaza, Boston: $1 Tacos Thursday nights from 5 pm to 7 pm starting June 4th!

I went to $1 Taco Thursday on 7/16/09 and had an amazing time! The tacos are fantastic, especially the duck taco--amazing flavor. The service was great and the bar area was spacious and comfortable. The Frugal Feaster gives Bonfire $1 Taco Thursday an A!

5/20/09

Beacon Hill: 6 B Lounge

6 B Lounge, 6 Beacon St. Boston: $3 Tapas on Tuesday nights, $6 margaritas on Wednesday nights and $6 mojitos on Thursday nights.

I went her tonight, Tuesday June 30 2009, and the sliders were horrendous! I'm sorry 6B Lounge, but buying mini-burgers at Market Basket (which is what they tasted and looked like) doesn't cut it, not even for $3! The Spring Rolls helped redeem, but the Spanish Meatballs were only so-so. If I had to give advice, I would recommend you go with the intention of drinking copious cheap Sangria (also on special) so you can't taste the tapas!

5/13/09

South End: Sage

Sage, 1395 Washington Street: 3 Stuzzi (small plates) for $10 Monday-Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m

Stuzzi is Italian for small plates and the food you get is similar to tapas. Sage's great Italian Stuzzi includes:

Chick Pea Caponata
Roasted Red Peppers
Pickled Eggplant
Marinated Mushrooms
White Anchovy Crostini

Amongst others!

5/7/09

Back Bay: Match

Match, 94 mass Ave, Boston : Tuesdays from 5-10 pm mini burger sliders are $1

Granted it's only one day out of the whole week, but it's until 10pm!!! $1 sliders YEAH! The slider's at Match are spectacular and my favorite martini is the "Cloud Nine" it's has toasted meringue on top!

4/29/09

Back Bay: 33 Restaurant & Lounge

33 Restaurant & Lounge, 33 Stanhope St., Boston : $3 menu available Wed to Sat., from 5-7pm at the Bar & High Tops.

3 for $3
traditional sliders
grilled lamb chops w/ foundu dip
jumbo shrimp w/ cocktail sauce
cape cod oysters and 3 sauces
tomato, basil, mozzarella stacks
crostini – olive, mushroom and caprese
dips w/pita – baba ganoush, hummus and tzatziki

$3 Sides
basket of fries
mac & cheese
caesar salad
side salad

I went here last night. The Mac&Chz = A- (AMAZING if you like garlic), Mediterranean Hummus Plate = B (you can't really mess up pita and hummus). These snack asre a GREAT deal for $3!! The drinks are pricey, $9 was the cheapest glass of wine or $14 for a martini. The ambiance is very chic, with the was and bar changing color , due to lighting, every 5 minutes.

4/27/09

Back Bay: Daily Grill

Daily Grill, 105 Huntington Ave. Boston, MA: Free "Rush Hour" appetizers with a drink order at the bar! Appetizers priced at $2.95 and $3.95. 4pm-7pm Monday-Friday, Saturday between noon & 5pm, or Sunday all day and receive a free Rush Hour appetizer.

A blogger on Chowhound, Boston had this to say: "We stumbled into the Daily Grill in the Pru (across from Brasserie Jo) and ordered drinks. The bartender pointed out that we were then entitled to 2 free small appetizers. The list ran about 10 or 12 long and included sliders, crab cakes, a hot dog, artichoke dip and chicken pot pie. We were planning to go out for dinner, but it was free, so we ordered the sliders and some hummus and pita. Small plates but pretty good for free food. After the free app, you can order more for 2.95 or 3.95 each. It's a chain, so don't expect greatness but the bar has a nice atmosphere and you can snack for cheap."

Back Bay: Brownstone

Brownstone, 111 Dartmouth Street, Boston: Late Night Menu with appetizer options for under $10. Served from 10 pm to 1:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The sliders we had here were good, small (obviously), but good. Personally, I think they should give you four sliders instead of three so if you're a two or a four top you all get an even amount. The Queso dip was pretty lame for a whopping $9. I would steer clear of it, you can get the same dip at Qdoba for $4. However, the scene here is very fun and I think anyone could have an enjoyable time eating some snack at Brownstone late night with a cocktail.

4/24/09

Somerville: Gargoyles on the Square

Gargoyles on the Square, 219 Elm St, Somerville, MA : Tokyo Tuesday buy a Bento Box dinner $15! It can be paired with a flight of sakes for another $10.

For Tokyo Tuesday you get a bento box for $15, the contents change on a weekly basis. For those of you, like me, who do not know what a bent box is, Wikipedia describes it as, "is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables as a side dish."

Newton (Chestnut Hill): The Met Club

The Met Club, 1210 Boylston St, Newton, MA : $20 Flat Bread Sunday dinners, a three-course prix fixe meal of salad, flat bread and dessert for just $20

You don't see too many prix fixe dinners on this blog because (obviously), it's a blog dedicated to happy hour, and in the vein I don't like to post things that cost more than say, $10. But this Prix Fixe, 3 course meal deal, is only $20!!! So I had to make an exception (I did this as well with the AShmont Grill's Wine Club which is only $30 for a a 3-course meal and wine).

4/19/09

About Me

My photo
Somerville, MA
When I first moved to Boston I was disappointed to learn there was no, real, happy hour (due to the notorious Massachusetts Blue Laws). As a person who LOVES a good deal (and nachos with beer) I quickly learned of the numerous restaurants offering food specials in lieu of happy hour. Over the years I became a go-to person for many of my friends and co-workers looking for a good place to go after work or grab a bite and cocktail. Unfortunately the other websites supposedly dedicated to happy hour were more advertising ploys. Their listings were out-of-date and did not even tip the iceberg for what is truly out there. I decided to create this blog and try to make it user friendly by dividing up the happy hours by location, duration of the specials, and nights of the week the specials are available. I also add my two-cents from time to time. I'm a bit of a nacho connoisseur and have strong opinions on where to go and how to eat them! I hope you find my blog useful and entertaining. Enjoy! -Carrie
